Sandwiched between the two giants, China from the North and India from the other sides lies a small Himalayan Kingdom known as Bhutan which is also known as a Carbon Negative Country where it absorbs more carbon dioxide than it produces.

Land Area and Population

Bhutan covers approximately an area of 38,394 square kilometers(14,824 sq mi) which is smaller than some of the states in the world. As the country is small, so is its population. Therefore, Bhutan has approximately about 750,000 people residing.

Districts (Dzongkhags)

Unlike other countries, Bhutan does not have states instead it is divided into 20 Districts/Dzongkhags of which only western and eastern parts are more popular in tourism.

Government System

The government system of Bhutan is known as Democratic Constitutional Monarchy, where the head of the state is the King(Druk Gyalpo) and the Head of the Government is the Prime Minister. Hence, the Prime Minister is elected every after 5 years whereas the King does not undergo election but heirs the throne.

Economy

The main economy of Bhutan is boosted by Hydro Power Electricity followed by Tourism and Agriculture.

State Religion

The state religion of Bhutan is Buddhism (72%) followed by Hinduism (22%), Christianity (5%), and Muslim (0.1%).

National Animal

The National Animal of Bhutan is known as Takin(Budorcas taxicolor).It has head of a goat and body of a cow. It is an endangered species and is found in Bhutan, China, and India. Mythologically it is believed to be created by a great spiritual master Drukpa Kuenley(Divine Mad Man).

National Language

In Bhutan we have about 19 languages/dialects but Dzongkha is the official language of Bhutan.

National Flower

Blue Poppy(Gakyidiana)is the National Flower of Bhutan. It is very rare and only found at higher altitudes (3500m-4500m). Since it withstands harsh weather condition, it is associated with attainment of enlightenment in Buddhism.

National Tree

The National tree of Bhutan is known as Cypress(cupressus). In Bhutan Cypress tree is considered very sacred as it is associated with myths and beliefs.

National Bird

The National Bird of Bhutan is Raven(corvus corax). In Bhutan Raven is considered as the guardian deity Gonpo Jaro dongchen(Raven headed Mahakha). In addition, Raven head is also featured in the Crown of our Monarch.

National Game

The National Game of Bhutan is Archery. It is played during the holidays or festivals where both men and women participate in the game. While the man shoots the arrow, the opponent woman distracts the archer.

Weather/Climate

The climate in Bhutan is very favorable. In winter(December-February)the temperature goes down to a minimum of -5 C and in Summer(June-August) it goes up a maximum of 38 C.

Food/Cuisine

The National Dish of Bhutan is known as Ema Datshi(Chili with Cheese). On the other hand, non-vegetarian people consume more of Pork and Beef followed by Chicken and Fish.
